Charges and operation
Have you received a Clean Air Zone penalty charge?
You may receive a £120 penalty charge if you have driven a chargeable (i.e. non-compliant) vehicle in the Clean Air Zone and have not paid the relevant daily fee or have a valid exemption in place.
Read about how the daily fee for driving in the Clean Air Zone applies to different vehicle types.
There is a payment ‘window’ of 13 days to pay the fee that applies to your day of travel:
- up to 6 days before your journey
- on the day your vehicle enters the zone
- up to 6 days after your journey (23.59 deadline on the 6th day)
If you have received a penalty charge notice you have up to 28 days to pay, which is measured from the ‘date of service’.
The standard penalty charge is £120 but this is reduced by 50% to £60 if paid within 14 days of the date of service.
How to pay a Penalty Charge Notice
To pay the penalty charge notice you will need the penalty charge reference (which will start with KW) and your vehicle registration number.

If you disagree with the Penalty Charge Notice
If you believe that you have received a penalty charge notice in error you can choose to submit a challenge.
If you do nothing we may issue you with a Charge Certificate, which will increase the standard penalty charge by 50% to £180.
