Pay the charge
Charges and operation
Birmingham's Clean Air Zone went live on 1 June 2021 and from 14 June high-polluting vehicles will be charged to drive within Birmingham's A4540 Middleway (but not the Middleway itself) unless subject to an exemption.
As per the Charging Order, which is the legal document setting out how the zone will operate, the charges will be:
- £8 per day for cars, taxi and LGVs
- £50 a day for coaches, buses and HGVs
Payment must be made via the Government's online payment system or by calling the National Contact Centre on 0300 029 8888 (8am to 4:30pm) either:
- 6 days before the day of your visit
- the day of your visit
- 6 days after the day of your visit
Please note you will not receive a notification or alert advising you that you have entered the zone and payment is due; you as a driver are fully responsible for understanding and managing all payments.
If you do not pay during that allocated 13-day payment window you will be subject to a Penalty Charge Notice of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
A 'day' is classified as midnight to midnight, not 24 hours from when you enter the zone. During that midnight to midnight timeframe, you can enter and leave the zone numerous times and only incur a single charge. However if you cross the midnight threshold you will be charged for two days.
